Matt Gunn and Giuffre Bros. – a sure-fire combination for success

In 1996 when Matt Gunn of Gunn for Hire Trucking Inc. Crane Service, Boston, decided he wanted to replace his 10-year-old truck-crane, he called six dealers around the country. “No one would take my used truck for a down payment,” he says.
Then a friend in the business told him to call Giuffre Bros. “They made it easy for me to make a deal,” Matt says. “I’ve been doing one-stop shopping with them ever since.”
Matt’s self-operated crane-for-hire is doing so well, and buying cranes from Giuffre Bros. is so easy and convenient, he now gets a new crane every other year. “I give them a call, and they send me pictures and specs. I decide what I want, and then I drive from Boston to Milwaukee to trade in my old crane and drive home the new one.”
Not only is it an easy transaction; “I have a great visit when I get to Milwaukee,” Matt says.
Gunn for Hire (Ask Matt if he ever has a problem getting paid!) serves roofers and building-supply companies as well as HVAC and other trade contractors. “Some of them are too small to have their own crane or don’t need a crane full time,” Matt explains. “Others have their own equipment, but they overextend it.”
Although his 3470 model truck crane is capable of lifts up to 34,000 lbs., Matt prefers to limit his loads to about 2,000 pounds.
Matt launched Gunn for Hire 18 years ago, when he got an opportunity to buy a crane he had been operating for an employer. He sensed that there would be a market for an independent with a mobile crane in Boston, and his hunch was right.
“There is a lot of work downtown,” he says, “and I get calls from all over the city,” a historic metropolis with tight quarters at every turn.
Pleased with the product and the sales process, Matt says, “I’ve recom-mended Giuffre Bros. to countless companies.”
He also can vouch for the quality of service after the sale. “One time I had a technical problem,” he recalls. “I called Dominic [Giuffre] at home, and by the end of the phone call, it was taken care of.”
Matt may not be the biggest gun on the East Coast, but he has built a secure, profitable business based on repeat customers and referrals. He appreciates that Giuffre Bros. had the confidence in him to help him get started with the right equipment and that they continue to take such good care of him.
